Best Cigars for Beginners (2026): 10 Starter Cigars, Ranked by Real Smokers

For adults 21+. This is a guide to flavor and choosing, not health advice.

Every "best beginner cigar" list online gets copied from the one before it. We wanted something different: a short list of easy-to-find, forgiving cigars that you can vote on once you've tried them. Over time the community's Like / Pass / Want to try votes decide the order, not us.

If you're brand new, read How to Choose Your First Cigar first, then come back.

What makes a cigar "beginner friendly"?

  • Mild to medium strength. Strength is the nicotine kick, and it's what catches new smokers off guard.
  • A lighter wrapper, usually Connecticut shade. If wrappers are new to you, see Cigar Wrapper Types Explained.
  • A forgiving construction that burns evenly even if your cut or light isn't perfect.
  • Easy to find at most shops, so you're not hunting.
  • A moderate size. A robusto (about 5 x 50) takes roughly 45–60 minutes.

Ready to step up?

Once these feel easy, people tend to move to the Oliva Serie V, My Father Le Bijou 1922, or the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Natural. Those are fuller cigars, so take it slow.

Beginner tips

  • Don't inhale cigar smoke. Puff and taste.
  • Smoke after a meal. Strength hits harder on an empty stomach.
  • Have water or coffee nearby.
  • Cut just the cap with a straight cut, toast the foot, and rotate while you light.
  • It's fine to put it down before the end.

Why we ask you to vote

Ranked Cigars has no 100-point scale and no paid placements. When you smoke one of these, hit Like, Pass, or Want to try on its page. A beginner's Pass is just as useful as a veteran's Like, because the next new smoker sees both. Here's how the rankings work.

Your move: pick one cigar from this list this week, smoke it, and vote. 21+.
