Bourbon and a cigar is about the most common pairing there is, and for good reason. Bourbon brings caramel, vanilla, and oak. A lot of cigars bring cocoa, leather, coffee, and spice. Put them together and each one fills in what the other is missing.
But "just grab anything dark" isn't great advice. A delicate Connecticut can get flattened by a high-proof pour, and a pepper bomb can make a sweet wheated bourbon taste thin. Below are the cigars that keep coming up as bourbon partners, each linked to its page on Ranked Cigars so you can see how real smokers vote and add your own.
How to pair a cigar with bourbon (the short version)
- Match intensity. A lighter, lower-proof bourbon goes with a medium cigar. A barrel-proof pour can stand up to a full-bodied, dark-wrapper cigar.
- Sweet with sweet, or sweet against spice. Maduro wrappers echo bourbon's caramel. A spicy Habano or Nicaraguan puro plays against it, which a lot of people like even more.
- Wheated vs. high-rye. Softer wheated bourbons tend to like smooth, chocolatey cigars. Spicier high-rye bourbons hold up to peppery blends.
- Sip slowly, and have water nearby. A splash of water or a single big ice cube opens the bourbon up and resets your palate between puffs.

Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Maduro
If you asked a room full of cigar smokers for one bourbon cigar, this would probably get the most votes. The box-pressed maduro gives you cocoa, coffee, and a little sweetness that lines up with the caramel and oak in an older bourbon. It's not cheap, so save it for a pour you actually care about. Oliva Serie V
A full-bodied Nicaraguan cigar with a lot of spice and a rich, leathery core. It's one of the better choices for barrel-proof bourbon, because a milder cigar would just disappear next to it. Want it a little sweeter? Try the Serie V Maduro or the Serie V Melanio. Vote on Oliva Serie V · All Oliva lines
My Father Le Bijou 1922
Strong, dark, and peppery, with earth and a bit of cocoa underneath. This is the cigar for a high-rye bourbon you'd describe as "spicy." Not a first cigar, and not a morning one. Vote on Le Bijou 1922 · All My Father lines
Arturo Fuente Hemingway
Not everything has to be a powerhouse. The Hemingway is medium-bodied with cedar and a gentle sweetness, and it's lovely next to a softer wheated bourbon. The fun shapes don't hurt either. If you want more depth, the Hemingway Maduro is a step darker. Vote on Hemingway · All Arturo Fuente lines
Liga Privada No. 9
Drew Estate's dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf cigar is known for chocolate, espresso, and a thick, chewy smoke. Next to bourbon, the sweetness really comes out. It can be hard to find, so if you see it, grab one. Vote on Liga Privada No. 9 · All Drew Estate lines
Camacho American Barrel-Aged
This one leans right into the theme: part of the tobacco is aged in bourbon barrels. It's a fun one to try side by side with your pour to see how much of the barrel actually comes through. Vote on Camacho American Barrel-Aged · All Camacho lines
Drew Estate Kentucky Fire Cured
Fire-cured tobacco gives this cigar a smoky, campfire character. People either love it or pass on it, which makes it perfect for a vote. With bourbon it's a bit like sitting next to a fire pit. Vote on Kentucky Fire Cured
Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro
Smooth, sweet, and very easygoing. This is a good "I just want a nice cigar with my everyday bourbon" choice, and it won't fight with whatever's in the glass. Vote on Perdomo 20th Maduro · All Perdomo lines
Ashton VSG
Rich, layered, and refined. This is the cigar for when someone opens the good bottle. Medium to full, with leather, spice, and a long finish. Vote on Ashton VSG
Oliva Serie G Maduro
The weeknight pick. You get chocolate and nuts for a fraction of the price of most of this list, and it's smooth enough for any bourbon. We covered more like it in Best Maduro Cigars Under $10. Vote on Serie G Maduro

Bourbon and cigar FAQ
Do I need a strong cigar for bourbon? No. Match the cigar to the pour. A soft, lower-proof bourbon pairs nicely with a medium cigar. Save the full-bodied cigars for bigger pours.
Maduro or Habano with bourbon? Both work. Maduros echo bourbon's sweetness. Spicier Habano and Nicaraguan cigars play against it. Try one of each with the same pour and see which you'd vote Like on.
What about mild cigars? Most Connecticut-shade cigars get overpowered by bourbon. If you prefer mild, try them with coffee instead, and check out our Best Mild Connecticut Cigars.
