For adults 21+. Flavor guide only, no health claims. Prices vary by shop, size, and state taxes, so treat "under $10" as typical single-stick pricing, not a promise.
I built Ranked Cigars because I wanted one place to keep track of the cigars I liked, the ones I wanted to try, and what other smokers were recommending (or warning me off). Maduros were one of the first lists I started. Something about that dark, oily wrapper just says "slow evening on the porch."
The catch: plenty of the famous maduros cost $15, $20, or more per stick. The good news is you don't have to go there to get the cocoa, coffee, and molasses flavors people love. Below are the maduros that keep coming up as the best for the money, each linked to its page on Ranked Cigars so you can see how real smokers vote and add your own.
What makes a cigar a "maduro"?
"Maduro" means "ripe" in Spanish. It refers to the wrapper, not the strength. A maduro wrapper is fermented longer and hotter than a natural wrapper, which darkens the leaf and brings out natural sugars. That's where the sweetness comes from: think dark chocolate, espresso, raisin, and earth.
A few things worth knowing:
- Maduro doesn't automatically mean strong. Some maduros are medium and very smooth. Others are full-bodied and peppery. The filler tobacco decides the strength.
- The wrapper leaf matters. Connecticut Broadleaf tends to be sweet and chunky. Mexican San Andrés is earthier and a bit drier. Brazilian Arapiraca leans spicy and sweet.
- Maduros reward a slow pace. Puffing too fast pushes the sugars toward bitter.

Oliva Serie G Maduro
If there's one cigar on this list that almost everyone agrees on, it's this one. A dark Mexican maduro wrapper over sun-grown Nicaraguan filler gives you chocolate, nuts, and a little coffee, without a lot of harshness. It's an easy box to keep around. Vote on Oliva Serie G Maduro.
Undercrown Maduro
Drew Estate's Undercrown started as the cigar the factory rollers smoked when they couldn't take the pricier blends home. It's medium to full, with cocoa, espresso, and a bit of pepper. In most sizes it lands under $10. Vote on Undercrown Maduro.
Brick House Maduro
Brick House is one of those "smokes way above its price" brands. The maduro is sweet and bready with a toasty finish, and the large sizes give you a long smoke for the money. Vote on Brick House Maduro.
La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduro
Big ring gauges, lots of smoke, and earthy, slightly sweet flavor. It's not the most complex cigar here, but it's a great "I've got an hour and a drink" pick. Vote on La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduro.
Arturo Fuente Maduro
Fuente's everyday maduro is the definition of reliable. Construction is consistent and the flavor is sweet, earthy, and easy to like. It's a good benchmark: if you know what you think of this one, you'll know which direction to go next. Vote on Arturo Fuente Maduro.
Macanudo Maduro
If you're used to mild cigars and want to dip a toe into maduros, this is the gentle way in. It's smooth and lightly sweet, with less pepper than most of the list. Vote on Macanudo Maduro.
A little more flavor, still close to $10
These sit right around the $10 mark depending on size and where you buy. Smaller vitolas are usually the cheapest way in.
- Asylum 13 Maduro: medium, creamy, espresso and leather. A favorite first "real" maduro for a lot of people.
- CAO Brazilia: a dark Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper with sweet spice and cocoa.
- Rocky Patel Vintage 1990: aged broadleaf, smooth and sweet, a long-running crowd favorite.
- Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro: rich and polished, often a little over $10, but smaller sizes can sneak under.
Worth the splurge (when you're ready)
Not under $10, but if you find a budget maduro you love, these are the next step up:
- Oliva Serie V Maduro: fuller and deeper than the Serie G.
- Ashton Aged Maduro: refined and smooth.
- My Father Le Bijou 1922: a bold, box-pressed maduro that people rave about.
How to pick your first budget maduro
- Start with strength, not the wrapper color. If you mostly smoke mild cigars, try Macanudo Maduro or Asylum 13 before jumping to a full-bodied stick.
- Buy singles first. Even at under $10, a box is a commitment. Try one or two sizes before buying more.
- Try the robusto. Robustos usually cost less and give you a clear read on the blend in under an hour.
- Pair it with something that has a little sweetness, like coffee, a stout, a dark rum, or bourbon. Maduros and dessert-style drinks get along well.
- Rest it if you can. A week or two in a humidor often smooths out a fresh cigar.
- Write down what you thought. That's honestly why I built the site. Two weeks later, I could never remember which one I liked.
Tell us what you think
This list is a starting point, not the final word. The whole idea behind Ranked Cigars is that real smokers decide what's good. Every cigar above has its own page where you can:
- 👍 Like it if it's in your rotation
- 👎 Pass if it didn't work for you
- ⭐ Want to try to save it to your list for your next shop visit
It's free, and it's 21+ only. With 4,800+ cigar lines on the site, you'll probably find a few maduros we didn't mention. If you have a favorite under $10 that should be on this list, vote for it, and if enough people like it, it'll climb the rankings.
